The Australian screen industry has yet another feather in its cap with the second season of 90s teen drama remake Heartbreak High breaking into the Netflix Top 10 for English-language shows, following the recent success of Boy Swallows Universe which reached third place on the list.

The show produced by Fremantle and NewBe has taken Hartley High in Sydney to the global charts, gaining 2.3 million views since its release last Thursday and reaching seventh place for English-language TV shows for the week of 8-14 April even though it was only live for half that week.

Heartbreak High was the number one show in Australia and New Zealand, and also achieved third place in South Africa, Kenya, and the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The show has also developed a strong following in Central Europe where it reached fourth and sixth position in the Czech Republic and Slovakia respectively. Among the countries with the largest numbers of Netflix subscribers, Heartbreak High has also stolen hearts in the UK, France and Germany.

In total, the release hit the Top 10 in 24 countries, from Jamaica to Nigeria to Mauritius to Ireland.

The first season that premiered in September 2022 won the 2023 International Emmy Award for Best Kids: Live-Action, alongside numerous other awards for its actors, designers and screenwriters in Australia.

That season spent five weeks in Australia’s top 10 TV shows on Netflix and three weeks in the global Top 10, amassing 42.6 million hours viewed in three weeks.
